Herewith follows a detailed description on how we tackle such a feat:

Let’s take for example a 6-camera musical concert DVD with multi-track audio. I believe it’s important for you to understand the process. When recording such a DVD you can communicate to technical crew what it is that you want.

Multi-track audio means we record every voice and instrument separately, similar to a studio situation. A splitter is used to conduct signal to the Pro-Tools recorder. This allows us to re-record faulty vocals or instruments in the studio after the show and maybe do some pitch correcting for a studio quality surround mix with a live feel.

Camera positions are planned in advance. First and foremost we have the Jimmy Jib crane camera for all sorts of interesting shots including audience fly-over’s. Secondly we have the dolly and trach which is a bit like a trolley on a train rail. This is a very cool looking shot with some movement and audience in the foreground. Thirdly we have an extreme wide angel at the back of the venue. Fourthly is the close-up camera with an HD lens. The fifth and sixth camera may be located on the flanks of the stage for further close-ups and odd 45% angled shots with a bit of a music video flavour. All six camera’s are fed to the vision mixer. Cameramen are directed with voice comm. Sets.

Most production companies record the output of the vision mixer as the final product prohibiting any changes to be done in post production. This is where we do things differently. I prefer capturing the footage of all six cameras and doing a complete re-edit in the studio. In this way my clients can give their input. An unwanted shot can thus be changed to any of the other 5 camera’s at any time during the post production phase.

Last step in the process is creating an interactive DVD menu containing sound, video text and animation. The master is authored and delivered to the duplication house where thousands of copies are made for commercial use.

Making a DVD like this consists of a crew of 11 people. Of course every DVD shoot can be customised according the client’s needs. I hope you found the process interesting. You are welcome to contact us if you need any assistance for a similar production.
